Paws for Celebration

Homemade Milk Bones
The best T-R-E-A-T in town 

3/4 Milk, I used Almond Milk
1 TBS Beef Broth
1/3 Cup Greek Yogurt
1 TSP Salt
1 Egg, Beaten
3 Cups Whole Wheat Flour, or Flour

Mix salt, Greek Yogurt, broth and egg with milk. 
Gradually blend in flour and mix until stiff dough forms. 
Dust surface and roll dough out, cut with cookie cutter. (I happen to have a bone shape.) 
Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes on a greased baking sheet. After 20 minutes flip over, allow to golden on other side for 2 - 5 minutes, it does not need to get as brown as on the top side.
Allow to cool.
Bone Appetit!

A Weekend Goes to the Dogs

February 2nd is a very big day for the dogs in my family.  My family dog Penny turns 17! I have never met a dog that old before and I cannot believe the puppy I got in first grade is still with us. We are so lucky. Penny moves a little slower these days and she may not hear very well, but she still frolics in the yard and eats wet dog food like a champion.  We know this may be Penny's last birthday and that makes it bittersweet. But dogs, unfortunately, only live for a section of our lives and Penny saw me through college — she did her dog duty and she did it well.  Cheers to Penny, the best dog in the entire world.

February 2nd also marks one year since Louis was adopted from the animal shelter. We are so lucky to have that little guy in our family!

And, February marks kind of a birthday month for Rasco, who was born on Leap Day in 2008. Happy sixth birthday month Little Man!

Hello All!  It has come to my attention that the lovely blogger Monu Teena at Recipes Passion has nominated me for a Liebster Award.

Yes, I did do this Liebster thing a couple of times already, but I like quizzes and spreading kindness. So, I am very excited to play. Plus, I get to meet new bloggers.  And, it is such a sweet recognition.

What describes you best?
ESTJ ... So, I am fiercely loyal and at times intense. But, I have an ooey-gooey cupcake streak.

Why did you start Blogging?

I am a writer. So, as a journalism senior at LSU, it felt natural to start a blog as a place to write and grow my passion for cooking and culture. 

Who inspired you most? Tell us about your inspirations & motivation?
My grandmother definitely inspired me most. She was the inspiration for this blog. As a German immigrant in America she passed on her traditions to my family and learned those of her Lebanese husband's. These recipes inspired my blog. But so much of me was also inspired by my grandma.

How do you compose a Blog Post? and decide for a title?

My blog is all about traditions and celebrations. So it almost always correlates with a holiday or event and gives a recipe for a common food at that celebration. Sometimes the holidays are international and the recipe and custom goes back generations. Other times the recipe is a toast to a friend's birthday or modern holiday. Life is a celebration! 

What is the first thing you like to order first in a restaurant?
First thing? Bread or cheese :) 

What you have when you have a sweet tooth? Make it your own or just get it from a nearby Superstore?
I made a rule a couple of years ago that if it comes out a box, it should stay in it. So I only eat sweets if they are homemade. And, I love sweets. My in a pinch cookie recipe is snickerdoodles, I know it by memory. And, for just a little something sweet, I love dark chocolate.

Snow Sno-Balls

Being from New Orleans, this is my first time living in real, traffic stopping snow. And, I don't like it. Rasco really, really does not like it. He spent two minutes on the ground which culminated in crying. Yes, he is getting booties. Until then, we are relying on socks and two minute potty trips. 

On the plus side, I saw children having a snow ball fight yesterday, I had actually never seen that before in real life. It was sweet. It is a very weird sensation to be an adult experiencing snow for the first time. I also decided to make snow ice cream. There were recipes all over the Internet and tons of clean, none-trotted on snow on my balcony, so I decided to give it a shot. 

In the end, I think a better term is snow sno-ball. My snow ice cream was a very similar consistency to a condensed milk New Orleans sno-ball. Instead of a SnoWizard machine, this one was made by Mother Nature. 

Snow Sno-Balls
Somehow it tastes like home?

Half cup of milk, I used almond milk
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla
1/4 cup sugar
Start with 2 cups of snow, but I ended up shoveling more in ... 

Combine milk, vanilla & sugar, stirring until sugar is dissolved. 

Add two cups of snow — adding as much as you need for it to get a whipped, ice creamy consistency. I ended up scooping two or more measuring cup fulls of snow. 

Allow to freeze a couple of minutes. 
Add salt to the top, about 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon? And enjoy! 
Or skip the salt and pour Kahlua over it ...

Leftover Christmas Cookies ... with Hot Chocolate, Marshmallow and Candy Canes!

Hot Chocolate Cookies ... Made from Holiday Leftovers!

Ok, ok, ok — we are all thinking the thought we never thought we would: "I can't eat any more sweets." And, if you're like me, you still have a ton stockpiled after the holiday.  Solution? Do it big. 

I give you Leftover Christmas Cookies ... That's right, a cookie recipe to use up your leftover candy canes, chocolate and cocoa.  I found a Cocoa Cookie recipe on the Swiss Miss website and made a few holiday candy changes. So, thank you Swiss Miss


  • 3/4 cups butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 envelopes Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa Mix (this recipe is derived from one on the Swiss Miss website)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 6-8 oz Chocolate chips or Christmas chocolate broken into chunks 
  • 6 candy canes, crushed
  • 1/2 cup small marshmallows

Cream sugars and butter, mix in vanilla and egg.
Blend in dry ingredients.
Add smashed candy canes (I got to use a hammer!), broken Christmas chocolate and marshmallows.
Roll into half inch balls, smaller dollops are best because dough spreads, and bake at 350 on a greased baking sheet for about 10 minutes.
Allow to cool on sheet for a few minutes and then allow cookies to harden on a cooling rack.
Enjoy the ooey, gooey, peppermint candied HoCho goodness!
